ABOUT US AND OUR SERVICES

In counseling, the student and counselor work together to develop more personal awareness and the skills needed to overcome barriers to success. We also help students grow and develop in ways that allow them to take advantage of the educational opportunities at Amarillo College. All services are free and confidential.

We provide counseling to all enrolled students regardless of national origin, race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, functional ability, socio-economic status, body size and appearance, age, and religious affiliation.

SHOULD YOU MEET WITH A COUNSELOR?

Students often seek counseling services for many reasons. One thing these students have in common is that something is going on personally which keeps them from reaching their goals. If the issues you face are outside the scope of our counselors or if additional resources would be helpful, then referral sources will be provided. Here are some examples of reasons that a student may want to seek counseling:

  • Test Anxiety
  • Time Management
  • Academic Adjustment/Concerns
  • Strategies for Handling Anxiety, Stress, or Depression
  • Relationship Troubles
  • Transitions in Life
  • Identity Exploration
  • Eating Concerns
  • Feeling Overwhelmed

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Prior to your first appointment, we ask students to complete the intake forms that can be accessed online through your Counseling Center Student Portal https://actx.medicatconnect.com. To complete these forms, register your account using your ACConnect log-in and password and select the Forms tab.

These forms consist of contact information, background information, consent forms, and assessments of current symptoms. During an initial visit to the Amarillo College Counseling Center, a counselor will work with the student to clarify and assess concerns. The student and counselor will then work together to set counseling goals based around the presenting concerns and develop a treatment plan to address these concerns.

Due to scheduling and ensuring that students are matched with the best counselor for their individual needs, the initial appointment may not be conducted by the counselor with whom treatment is provided. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the client and counselor, so we encourage open and honest communication to ensure we develop the best plan for your specific needs.
