The Sports and Exercise Sciences (SES) curriculum provides basic courses for the first two years of a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Coaching/Teaching, Health Fitness Specialist and other related degrees required for employment in Education and in the Health and Fitness Industry.
It also provides courses for immediate entry into the workforce as a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Trainer, Sports Official and other related professions. Students should choose the degree option that best meets their educational objectives. Students working towards a Bachelor’s degree should plan their program to match the specific requirements of the senior institution of choice. Programs differ significantly. Students must consult with the major advisor for course selection.

General Education Requirements (42 Semester Hours)


Mathematics - 3 Hours


Life & Physical Sciences - 6 Hours


*Additional 2 hours will apply to Major Course requirements

Language, Philosophy & Culture - 3 Hours


Creative Arts - 3 Hours


Social/Behavioral Sciences - 3 Hours


Institutional Requirements - Speech - 3 Hours


Institutional Requirements - FYS - 3 Hours


Major Options (20 Semester Hours)


Students should select one of the following options:

Education-Coach/Teacher (Secondary) Option (20 Semester Hours)


*Additional 2 hours from Life & Physical Science requirement.

The Secondary Coach/Teacher curriculum is primarily for students who are seeking to coach and teach in grades 8-12. This option fulfills the first two years of a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor’s degree.

Recommended Courses (12 Semester Hours)


Students will be advised based on the university to which they plan to transfer. Possible options include:

Personal & Group Trainer Option (20 Semester Hours)


*Additional 2 hours from Life & Physical Science requirement.

This option is designed to prepare students to become personal trainers and group trainers. Upon completion, students will be prepared for employment as a personal trainer and group trainer. Certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) are optional.
