ABOUT US AND OUR SERVICES

In counseling, the student and counselor work together to develop more personal awareness and the skills needed to overcome barriers to success. We also help students grow and develop in ways that allow them to take advantage of the educational opportunities at Amarillo College. All services are free and confidential.

We provide counseling to all enrolled students regardless of national origin, race, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, functional ability, socio-economic status, body size and appearance, age, and religious affiliation.

TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT:

The Amarillo College Counseling Center is by appointment only. Initial appointments can be made by calling the counseling center at (806) 371-5900 and a counselor will work with you on scheduling your appointment. Sessions last approximately 45 minutes and clients may be scheduled back to back, so it is important for students to be on time to their scheduled appointments. Students are welcome to wait in the waiting room (room 228A) which is located inside of the Vice President of Student Affairs Suite and their counselor will come get them when they are ready.

Counseling offices are located on the second floor of the Student Services Center on the Washington Street Campus. We will schedule clients during school sessions only and we are closed on weekends, holidays, and school breaks.

SHOULD YOU MEET WITH A COUNSELOR?

Students often seek counseling services for many reasons. One thing these students have in common is that something is going on personally which keeps them from reaching their goals. If the issues you face are outside the scope of our counselors or if additional resources would be helpful, then referral sources will be provided. Here are some examples of reasons that a student may want to seek counseling:

  • Test Anxiety
  • Time Management
  • Academic Adjustment/Concerns
  • Strategies for Handling Anxiety, Stress, or Depression
  • Relationship Troubles
  • Transitions in Life
  • Identity Exploration
  • Eating Concerns
  • Feeling Overwhelmed

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Prior to their first session, students are asked to complete the intake packet and bring it to their scheduled appointment. During an initial visit to the Amarillo College Counseling Center, a counselor will work with the student to clarify concerns and to make an initial assessment of their situation. The student and counselor will then work together to set counseling goals based around the presenting concerns. Additional sessions will be focused on assisting the student in achieving their counseling goals. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the client and counselor. Counselors are not mind readers and their job is done most effectively through open and honest communication. Follow-up appointments will be set by the student’s counselor.
